HEALTHY HOOVES & SO MUCH MORE....

Home of the only Equine Podologist in Andalucia practising the Whole Horse Protocol. Our experience and facilities provide all that is necessary for the resolution of horses afflicted with laminitis, founder, navicular, quarter cracks or any other hoof pathologies. Able to resolve these problems with dietary knowledge, bodywork, the correct exercise and last, but by no means least, a proven natural balance trimming method for hooves.  This is just an outline of what is The Whole Horse Protocol.

At THE WHOLE HORSE PROTOCOL you will find a supportive friendly atmosphere where the well being of the horse is the number one priority! We cherish working with clients who are as passionate about horses as we are, as we guide and support you through the transition of your horse to healthy hooves and a far healthier body.

As competitive endurance riders our healthy barefoot horses speak for us.  We practice what we preach, also maintaining a respectful, natural ethic in the training and husbandry of our equine family.  Never ones to sit back on our laurels, we keep constantly up-to-date with our own education to be sure we are providing the most comprehensive and latest services to our clients.

Unlike us, horses don´t have lower leg muscle to help the circulation of blood to the extremities. Designed to expand and contract, a shod hoof is constricted, unable to assist the heart in this action.  A bare hoof expands when it makes contact with the ground, contracting as it lifts, thus acting as a small pump to assist in circulation and reducing impact to the extremities   Therefore the heart of the barefoot horse does not work as hard as that of its shod counterpart.  Peripheral loading caused by the shoe of the shod hoof causes far greater ´shock´ to the hoof and distal limb with every step the horse takes.
Practising the WHOLE HORSE PROTOCOL is the only road to a truly healthy horse.

The day will soon arrive when in order to stay competitive, competition horses will have to go barefoot.
Healthy hooves should have balance, a nice, full shape with a prominent frog and a sole that is dense and calloused. Thick, consistent wall around the perimeter with no flares, cracks or ripples.  The hoof will also be resilient and flexible enough to absorb and dissipate shock.  It will be at an angle that causes the least amount of stress on the tendons and ligaments of the leg, promoting good circulation that not only minimizes injuries but aides in healing. That is the real beauty of natural hooves.

A pasture trim is not the answer. Nor is going barefoot a cheap alternative to the farrier. The transition from shod to barefoot can take between 2 to 3 months or up to a year and more. Consulting with a professional hoof trimmer is just the beginning. When you love your equine friend and want to do the right thing by them patience will be required on your part.  Investing in a pair of hoof boots is a very viable option during the time of transition.  Trimming is just the end.  Diet and husbandry are the principal important factors.  Here, at The Whole Horse Protocol, we are realistic in regard to the limitation of facilities some have, and will always have a solution to help you improve them as much as possible.
